The role of the chair is vital in ensuring the governing body fulfils its functions well and the culture of the governing body is largely determined by its chair. As well as being “first amongst equals” the chair provides challenge and support; is an ambassador, sometimes a confidante, an arbitrator and a mentor.

This course examines the role of an effective chair. Areas covered include:

  • The role of the chair in setting the culture for the governing body
  • Leading effective governance: current expectations of the roles and responsibilities of a chair of governors
  • Relationship with the headteacher
  • Relationship with the governance professional and managing meetings
  • Improving the school
  • Strategic verses operational
  • Building and looking after the team
