Avoiding Burnout in Educational Leadership

  • St George's Primary School Hanover Square South Street London, England, W1K 2XH United Kingdom (map)

Platform: In-person training

Course fees: £70

1/2 day session: suitable for headteachers and all school leaders.

The role of headteacher is an extremely demanding and complex one. Their day-to-day work involves:

  • a high level of public accountability

  • constant scrutiny

  • problem solving of a serious nature

  • responding to the demands of an external context over which we have limited control

  • continually listening to other people’s difficulties

This has huge potential to negatively affect headteachers’ emotional and physical wellbeing.

It could be argued that it is essential (rather than a luxury) to carefully look after their wellbeing, as their ‘duty of care’ to staff and children.

Burnout is a very common phenomena in education leadership and is generally referred to as a physical and emotional depletion caused by unmanageable occupational stress.

The good news is that Burnout and Overwhelm are not a given of working in roles where leaders are consistently exposed to others’ high expectation and difficulties. New research and insights into ‘buffering’ the impact of this work mean that leaders can consciously choose to put in safeguards to their own mental wellbeing, whilst also remaining connected and present with those they lead.

Join Juliette Jackson, Executive Principal and psychotherapist (HGDipP) for a day exploring burnout in education leadership and what can be done in order to thrive at work.
