November 2021 marked a very special birthday in the life of St Michael at Bowes CE Junior School, Palmers Green. Our school celebrated being 125 years old in style, with a visit from Bishop Rob, Bishop of Edmonton; a week of learning about the art and music of the decades since 1896; a ‘Dress for the Decade’ day and the burial of a time capsule in the grounds the following week.

Bishop Rob told the children the story of Joshua Watson and answered their questions, both about Joshua and his own role in the church. Afterwards the RE pupil team took him for a tour around the school.

On Thursday 2nd December our ex-headteacher, Mrs Maria Jay, joined Lawrence DeSouza (Chair of Governors), Bambos Charalambous (MP, Governor and ex-pupil of the school), Lucy Nutt (Deputy Director of Education for Enfield) and Cllr Christine Hamilton (Deputy Mayor of Enfield) to witness the burying of a time capsule just in front of the school entrance. Members of the School Council said prayers, gave bible readings and read out a letter to the ‘Citizens of the future’ outlining their hopes and explaining the contents of the capsule, which included our school prayer, photos of the school, a mask and information about life during Covid-19. Everyone present had the opportunity to put a shovelful of earth into the hole as the marker plaque was unveiled.

We hope the time capsule will lie undisturbed for at least the next 125 years!
