Here at St Mary’s Bryanston Square CE Primary School, we wanted to develop an outdoor reading area for the children so that they could have a quiet and relaxing space when outdoors. As we know, the importance of reading is crucial for all children, both in the classroom as well as outdoors. Reading is the driver of success and we promote reading as much as possible.

Research has shown that social reading environments are key to creating reading communities. Creating physically engaging areas tempt children into texts and offer spaces to relax, browse, and read for pleasure. This is what we wanted to create!

We had an area in the playground that was not utilised and needed some TLC. With a generous donation from the Rose Foundation, we were able to transform this area into an engaging and inviting reading area.

The result of this project will be that children can continue the love of reading when outside, as well as classes coming out to have story time here too.

Children have loved the transformation, and already are taking time to enjoy the reading area. Some quotes from them are:

“It’s relaxing colourful and inviting”.

“It’s a great space to go and chill out if you don’t want to run about. I like reading and it’s nice to read outside”.

“We love our new reading are. It’s fun to be able to read outdoors under the shelter”.
