Church of England Primary Schools in the Deanery of Islington all enjoyed a fantastic joint Year 6 leavers’ service. It is a tradition to have a service for year 6 every year but this year was particularly special.
The Rev’d James Hughesdon welcomed us all to St Mary’s Church to the service led by Father David Allen from St Clement’s Church and organised by our wonderful Mary Thorne. The service started with a procession of our individual school banners. The Rt Rev’d Dr Joanne Grenfell, Bishop of Stepney, was present. She spoke to our children about the journey of life, focusing particularly on one part of the journey of life closing and another part of the journey of life opening up. Bishop Jo reminded us of the things that we need as we journey onwards. She spoke to us about how Christ is like her lamp, pointing her in the right direction and stopping her bumping into things. She also reminded our year 6 children that God has been with them thus far and will remain with them every step of the next exciting stage of the journey. Each child was given some sunflower seeds to take away with them as a symbol of our faith in God and of God’s love.
The service was a time to celebrate, a time to reflect and a time to thank God and all the people who have made a difference to the lives of our year 6 children and have helped prepare them for secondary school.
There was an opportunity for children to be still, to think and to record their hopes for the future on their order of service using their Deanery pen on which was inscribed: ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you’ John 14:27. This was the moment those of us who were present, will never forget. The church was silent as our children took the time to reflect and take in the peace that filled the sacred space.
We were delighted to welcome the Mayor of Islington, Councillor Marian Spall, who enjoyed a very special service. We really hope year 6 children will remember the occasion with fondness for many years to come. It was the children’s first opportunity to see children from other schools who they will see in September. We sent our children on their way with love and with great pride in all they have achieved in our schools.
